VMS is sounding like too much of a hassle to work properly. He's also a fan of the 4060. I have not done much with M-S but I do like them for Blumlein in a nice room. Well I can't speak for everyone but I think for vocals and acoustic guitar the AT4050 are great mics for the money, for a LDC they are an excellent all-rounder especially with multiple patterns. The KSM-44 is also great for that application, but pricier, as noted. I have 1 , getting 2 more - these are really good - flat but open - very good for vocals - i usually dont have to eq the vocals as they sit in the mix perfectly - no low end boost or bump - which is good as you dont want it in vocals - i use the for room mics as well - if you want colour just get the vocalist to sing 2" away from the mic.
