The Wm. Wrigley has been in the business of using twins in its commercials a lot longer than Toni Home Perms and being a Doublemint Twin was a more prestigious gig, so June and Patricia took their twin star power to the gum company. Since 1960, the commercials have featured twins (even some famous ones) chewing along to the upbeat Doublemint … But soon, Wrigley came calling. The Illinois natives starred as the famed Doublemint Twins in a series of spots that ran from 1985 to 1995, each one featuring the women as lighthearted, laughing sisters always having fun. THE ACTORS: The original Doublemint twins were 21-year-old Hoosiers Jayne and Joan Knoerzer. In the 1970s, June and Patricia Mackrell signed on to be the Toni Twins, representing Toni Home Perms. It always went like this: A pair of twins walk along the boardwalk while being creeped on by two dudes in polo shirts. Those girls then buy some gum, after which point the guys walk over and presumably invite them to their frat house. THE PRODUCT: Doublemint chewing gum THE CAMPAIGN: Wrigley introduced the gum in 1914, but it wasn't until 1959 that ads with actual twins first appeared, along with the catchy "double your pleasure, double your fun" jingle. Wrigley began using twins to market this classic chewing gum in 1939, playing off the idea that you should "Double your pleasure, double your fun, with Doublemint Gum." It is wholly owned by Mars, Incorporated, and along with Mars chocolate bars and other candy products, makes up Mars Wrigley Confectionery. Both changed their names after marriage and are now 79. I would love to find the 7-UP commercial from 1964 that sounded “like the Beatles” singing – ending with “7-Up, 7-Up, 7-Up your blues away.” I wish that film from Poopdeck Paul (Popeye Theater on Channel 9) and Milky’s Movie Party (on Channel 4) still existed…the latter also used to sometimes run a circus cartoon that I’ve been haplessly looking for, for decades now.
